Sermon On The Baptist Of The Nazarene - 796 Words

This past Sunday, at Woodview Church of the Nazarene, we had the pleasure of hearing our senior pastor, Mark Walker, preach. Pastor Mark had been on sabbatical for most of August, all of September and the first part of October and has been back just a few weeks. This sermon was just the second he has preached since coming back from that sabbatical. Pastor Mark, preaching on All Saints Day, took the opportunity to preach a message on the importance of remembrance and anticipation. He choose the text of Revelation 21:1-8, a passage concerning the age to come. This was also tied into our monthly celebration of communion, although we frequently celebrate communion more often than that. Pastor Mark spoke on the inspiration of those saints that have gone before us, the future final redemptive work of Christ and the final judgment. Pastor Mark s choice of text was fitting for All Saints Day and leading into the Eucharist. He utilized the form of the text, being apocalyptic, to shape a messa ge of hope inspired by the saints who have gone before who have trusted in the promise of God s future redemptive work. Pastor Mark took the promise of God s future in the age to come to inspire the congregation to follow wholeheartedly after God, just as the saints within our congregation have before. He encourage us to never forget what God has done in our lives and preserve in our walk. Lawrence Sherman and Richard Berk conducted a domestic violence experiment in Minneapolis. In April of 1984 this experiment came out in the American Sociological Review, Volume 49, Issue 2. The Findings Sherman and Berk mention that a police foundation study stated that the police had intervened at least once in the last two years of eighty five percent of cases (p.263). The study went on to mention that police presence was required five or more times in fifty-four percent of the spousal homicides (Sherman and Berk, p.263). However, it is important to mention that based on the data they had, it could not be determined if less or more arrests would help decrease the homicide rates. According to the American Sociological Review this experiment took place for eighteen months in the Minneapolis police. It was stated that the experiment started on March 17, 1981 and lasted until August 1, 1982. The two precincts with the highest reports of domestic violence were chosen. Juvenile delinquency Juvenile delinquency, also known as juvenile offending, or youth crime, is participation in illegal behavior by minors (juveniles) (individuals younger than the statutory age of majority). Most legal systems prescribe specific procedures for dealing with juveniles, such as juvenile detention centers, and courts. A juvenile delinquent is a person who is typically under the age of 18 and commits an act that otherwise would have been charged as a crime if they were an adult. Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, and others were established as a result of sole proprietorships that were known as talent agencies in the sasss and 1 asss. Since these proprietorships were small in size, if an artist or group produced an album that did not sell well, the labeling companies would be forced to keep promoting their artist because other clients were harder to find due to competition among labels. Steve Chapel and Rebel Grafton, Rock n Roll Is Here to Pay: The History and Politics of the Music Industry (Chicago: Nelson-Hall, Bibb 46.Over the past half-century, some of these labels were either combined or purchased by other corporations. In turn putting only a few major corporate giants in control of music promotion. The corporations would loan money in order to pay for these entrepreneurial institutions, but they later found themselves in debt from all of the labels they had purchased. This then caused the corporations to fire the talent agents and entrepreneurs that brought these companies to tuition to begin with.Eventually the only people controlling, discovering and promoting talent were the large Incorporated record labels. These record corporations dominated almost every aspect of music production. In order for an artist to become successful, they would need to sign a contract with one of these companies. These are commonly known as record deals, and without the promotion value of one of these corporations a group would have very little chance of achieving widespread popularity for themselves. Thus, the record corporations became the arbiters of taste for the music scene. In fact, they even had direct control over what songs are played on public radio stations, so the only music that was being exposed to the masses was room signed artists. Mark J. Percival, Music Radio and the Record Industry: Songs, Sounds, and Power. Popular Music and Society 34. 4 (201 1): 460. If a company did not like the way an artist sounded, they were not re-signed. If they did like their sound, a record contract would be negotiated.A new performer has relatively little bargaining leverage over the companies; hence the first contract that is signed Is monetarily unfavorable for the performer. The most common form of contract would Include an capital or risk capital. Sums of money as large as $100 million have been given to ammos artists to write and sell a set number of albums, These albums are then produced, promoted, and sold to the public. Ere danger for the artist lies in how many albums they sell. The investment capital given to them by the company is based off of a projected number of sales. If the actual amount of sales is lower than this amount, then the artists owe the record company a portion of the investment capital. This puts the artist in debt, and in order to pay it off, the artist will be forced to sign yet another record contract and try to sell even more albums the second time around. After Maria Carrys album Glitter failed to meet its enormous projected sales amount, MI Music canceled her contract and she found herself owing close to $72 million to the record company. -MI Drops Maria Carrey, BBC News, wry. BBC. Com, 23 Jan. 2002 (accessed 25 Par. 012). Thanks to her previous success she was able to overcome the loss and continue her singing career, but should something like this happen to a newly signed artist, their music career could effectively be over. Oftentimes the company drops an artist, and because of the contract agreements the artist cannot make music for anyone else. He entire system is therefore based off of the revenue earned by the record companies. The performers main goal becomes keeping the record companies happy because they will only make money once they pass the projected album sales figure. This is a fundamentally flawed system because the artist represents an equal if not more important aspect of the music industry, and the traditional system exploits them. In order for this system to change in the musicians favor, a drastic reconstruction of the industry must take place. Theirs is still a deeply troubled business. Since 2000, when online file-sharing took off, global recorded-music sales have fallen from $26. 9 billion a year to $15. 9 billion, according to the IF, a trade group.Apple has helped to smash profitable albums into less profitable singles. High-street music shops are closing. Digital outlets such as tunes are not growing nearly fast enough to offset the decline in CD sales. Indeed, in many countries they are stuck in a niche. In Japan, 73% of spending on recorded music in 2010 was on CDC, DVDs and vinyl. Fewer than one- fifth of Britons bought digital music last year. Streaming services such as Spottily, Inch make money from advertising and subscriptions, are not yet helping much. Hey brought in Just 3% of total recorded-music revenues last year, according to the Pl, which represents British record labels. The new products unveiled by the Great Turtleneck One this week should push the digital market out of its niche. Apples Cloud is not Just a storage locker for music. It will search devices for tracks purchased from the tunes store, and automatically give customers the rights to download the music to any Apple device. That puts Apples service ahead of recent offerings by Amazon and Google.

Women and Power

Men have continued to dominate the workforce in most companies for many years. This is due to the fact that they were viewed as the strongest gender. Women could not be assigned to positions that are too demanding hence they were barred from accessing powerful positions. However this attitude has changed over the years because there are many women who work in very reputable positions that were in the past reserved for men. This paper will focus on the efforts that have been made by women in a bid to achieve power.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Women and Power specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Men owe their power to their masculine bodies and money, whereas women rely on their knowledge to acquire power. According to Muoio (1998), today’s woman has proved men wrong because unlike in the past decades when she was designated to household duties, nowadays she can provide for the whole family without any hurdl es. Women have managed to climb the corporate ladder by seeking more knowledge that has placed them above their male counterparts. Moreover, the strategies employed by men have been rendered powerless by those of women. Sharon Patrick outlines that men have so much pride and thus they cannot dare bow down for the sake of retaining clients lest they loose their ego. Women on the other hand apply their motherly traits in business world and that is why they have been able to influence more clients to join their business circle. She explains that they use their politeness to lure more clients, and as common sense dictates they have more customers on their side because no client would dare go to a rude and arrogant male. These tactics made Sharon to become the president of Martha Stewart Living (Muoio, 2008) Women have been successful in influential positions because they are able to stand on their ground. This implies that they have strong working principles that can never be bent. This tactic has been useful to men because in most organizations men have been undermining them probably due to their low numbers in administrative units. For instance, Linda Chavez-Thomson, an executive vice president at AFL-CIO, was looked down upon by her colleagues because in their minds they had this attitude that women can only be secretaries but then Linda stood on her ground hence they had to assign that role to someone else and in the end a male member had to carry out the task that was meant for Linda.Advertising Looking for essay on gender studies? It is certain that women observed what was taking place in a few decades ago and realized that the only way they could acquire power is through excellence in academics. They were indeed right about this because in today’s world organizations are looking for outstanding talents and women have an upper hand in this because they are able to multitask without creating an imbalance on their tasks at work and their roles back at their homes. Since women are humble, they have been able to establish working relationships with clients unlike men and thus employers have been bringing more women on board because at the end of the day it is the number of sales that one has accomplished that matter. As Mitchell Bernard of Patton Boggs puts it, organizations that underrate the talents and skills possessed by women have been receiving more resignation letters than ever before as the ladies are absorbed by other employers who are able to appreciate their efforts. Such organizations have been lagging behind in performance because they have to keep on recruiting new employees now and then while they would have been saved from that hustle by appreciating the employees that they already have at hand. Women have been quite daring because they have put their careers at risk while trying to get to power. Perhaps what men do not bother to understand is that leadership is usually bestowed to someone who has the skills and personality of leading others. In that case, a leader should be respected regardless of her gender because the tasks and responsibilities that she bears are nothing less to the ones assigned to male leaders. The major hindrance between women and power has been themselves. This is because they are very jealous towards each other and in fact instead of rallying behind their female candidates they have been opposing them. This is lack of confidence and self esteem and this explains why most women have been left to take middle level positions (Anand, 2004). Women have managed to overcome racial discrimination unlike their male counterparts because they are not seen as threats by the whites and in that case they have been allocat ed leadership position. Perhaps those that would discriminate them feel that they can eliminate them any time they wished because their resistance cannot be compared to that of men. In organizational teams that are chaired by men the members are under pressure to achieve the organizational goal because when a man is in charge there are no requests but demands.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Women and Power specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More According to Coakley (2006), women are able to bond with team members and thus they use their persuasive skills such as sweet talking to ensure that the organization’s mission has been accomplished. Men have been regular critics of their female counterparts because they think they were born to rule over women and thus being under the leadership of a woman is like an insult to them. In conclusion, men should not judge a leader by her gender but instead should look at wha t she is able to do because we all have various abilities and skills and that’s what counts. Knowledge is the most appropriate source of power for both men and women because the others come and go. This is because ones you have acquired knowledge you can never loose it because you will keep on advancing it in order to remain more knowledgeable. References Anand, M. (2004).
